Chūsuke (or Tadasuke) drew the 69 pictures of woody plants included in a lithograph-printed picture book entitled Hokkaidō Shuyō Jumoku Zufu (Icons of the Essential Forest Trees of Hokkaidō). It was published in installments from 1920 to 1931. Two botanists (Kingo Miyabe (1860-1951) and Yushun Kudo (1887-1932)) supplied the text. They asked Chūsuke to draw every stage of the plant’s lifecycle, depicting the seeds, seedlings, blossoms and fruit. All were drawn accurately. Some of the scientific names given by Chūsuke have changed. Current scientific names are given below the pictures. Click on a picture to enlarge it.
